The 8th World Sudoku Championship and 22nd World Puzzle Championship have drawn up its
curtain in Changping District, Beijing on Oct.12. Presented by the World Puzzle Federation,
Beijing Media Network, Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation, Beijing Sports Foundation
and Changping District Government, and organized by Beijing Sudoku Association, this is the
first time the world top-class wisdom games have been hosted in China. 271 sudoku and puzzle
players from 35 countries and regions have participated in this year’s event.
In order to host a successful world-class event, the organizing committee has done plenty of
innovations by adding Chinese traditional culture elements in organizing the games. During the
opening, the participants witnessed the raising ceremony of the national flag of PRC.
Then, the flag of the championships was raised to the Chinese folk melody The Jasmine Flower. A big drum was beaten after the announcement of opening, a traditional Chinese way to kick
off a great competition. Chief referee Chen Cen and three-time WSC champion Jan Mrozowski
from Poland took oath in representative of referees and competitors.
Acting Director Zhang Yanyou of Changing District Government has extended a warm welcome to
the world competitors to Beijing. “The championships have gained great supports from Beijing
municipal government and all sectors from the society. It will contribute to Beijing’s efforts
in building itself as a world city,” Zhang said.
Board member of World Puzzle Federation, also Chairman of Hungarian Puzzle Association
Gyorgy Istvan appreciated the organizing committee’s efforts to make the event come
true. “The first sudoku and puzzle championships in China and in Asia will set a milestone
in promoting both events in the country, with more Chinese expected to be involved in the
wisdom games.” He said.
